Moringa

Moringa oleifera

One of 13 moringa species. The leaves are cooked fresh, dried for tea, or ground into a powder. The young pods are cooked as a vegetable and are sometimes called drumsticks.

The tree comes from India and Bangladesh. It is also grown in the Pacific islands, the Caribbean, Latin America, and Asia.

In the kitchen

Stir dried leaves into hot water the way you would make tea. Fresh leaves go into a pot of food the way spinach does. The powder mixes into a warm drink. Young pods, the drumsticks, are cooked as a vegetable. The root is used as a condiment and is often compared with horseradish.
